The Man Who Insisted on Light in the Darkness
The 17th-century Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn devoted himself throughout his life to a single technique. He would fill the entire canvas with deep darkness, then leave only one source of light
— the use of light and shadow that art historians call chiaroscuro. The figures in his paintings stand half-submerged in darkness, yet turned toward the light. That light is never flashy. It is quiet, narrow, and yet unwavering. In his later years, Rembrandt endured bankruptcy, the death of his wife, and the early death of his son, yet he never laid down his brush. The deeper the darkness became, the clearer his light shone.
Ministry, perhaps, resembles that painting. In the darkness of confused ideas, amid the temptation of polished false teachings, it means holding fast to one light alone
— the truth of the gospel. The essence of ministry that Pastor David Jang, founder of Olivet University, unfolds through his exposition of
1 Timothy stands precisely in that Rembrandt-like tension. The one who guards the light is a watchman, and the one who kneels beneath that light is a person of prayer. These two places together form the place of the true pastor.
The Gaze of the Watchman Who Never Leaves the Flock
The first thing the apostle Paul urges the young pastor Timothy in Ephesus is strikingly clear. It is not evangelism, church growth strategy, or forms of worship. It is this:
“command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer”
(1 Tim. 1:3). The foremost task of ministry is nothing less than guarding the truth. Pastor David Jang interprets the pastor’s essential calling in this passage through the language of the
“watchman”
— the one who stands alone on the city wall, scanning the horizon through the night, never abandoning his post even when sleep presses in.
The marketplaces of the Roman Empire were always overflowing with ideas and philosophies. Stoic philosophers stood on public platforms, while the sweet whispers of Gnosticism filled the alleyways. That age is not so different from ours. Self-help books sell better than Bible meditation, and the message of prosperity theology often sounds louder than the gospel of the cross. Cleverly packaged false teachings always borrow the language of doctrine as they slip into the community. In this muddled spiritual landscape, Pastor David Jang’s preaching asks the same weighty question:
“What are you standing on right now?”
The eyes of the watchman are not cold. What binds him to that place is not fear, but a burning love for the flock. The
“spiritual discernment” and
“admonition grounded in love” that Pastor David Jang repeatedly emphasizes are precisely the two weapons of this watchman. When firmness and compassion stand together, truth can be delivered without leaving wounds. Before condemning the one who has fallen into false teaching, the pastor reaches out again with a heart of sorrow. That is the real power of ministry centered on the Word.
The Prayer of the Chief of Sinners
Yet even the strongest watchman will collapse if his inner life dries up. This is where Pastor David Jang’s theological insight shines most clearly. The driving force of ministry does not come from duty or willpower, but from
“a vivid memory of grace.”
Paul’s confession is unflinching:
“Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners
— of whom I am the worst” (1 Tim. 1:15).
“I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, but I was shown mercy”
(1 Tim.
1:13). This is not the rhetoric of humility. It is the paradox of a man who once drove believers to death, yet became an apostle of the gospel. Before that staggering grace, he spends his whole life on his knees. Pastor David Jang explains the weight of this grace through the parable of the forgiven debt of ten thousand talents. One who has been forgiven can never treat others carelessly. The depth of that grace makes him humble
— and fervent.
The reason Mark deliberately recorded in his own Gospel the shameful scene of his fleeing naked from Gethsemane
(Mark 14:51–52) is the same. He could not live without bearing witness to the grace that had held even someone like him. Only the one who has not forgotten grace can truly carry compassion toward others. This is the point Pastor David Jang repeatedly presents as the inner engine of ministry.
When the Prayer Closet Embraces the World
This inner transformation inevitably broadens the range of prayer. In
1 Timothy
2, Paul commands four layers of prayer: supplication
(deesis), in which we bring our needs before God; worshipful prayer
(proseuche), bowing before the King; intercession
(enteuxis) for neighbors and community; and thanksgiving
(eucharistia) in response to the grace of salvation. Pastor David Jang says that all four layers of prayer point in one direction: from myself to my neighbor, from the church to the world, from the center of my own heart to all people everywhere.
“God wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth”
(1 Tim.
2:4). Before this verse, Pastor David Jang urges us to set aside, for a moment, the theological debate between Calvinism and Arminianism. More urgent than asking which side is right is learning to feel in our own hearts the Father’s deep concern for every soul that has not yet heard the gospel. The dignity of the elect and God’s love for every soul
— holding these two truths together in an integrated faith: this is the pastoral posture Pastor David Jang repeatedly calls for in his preaching.
The deeper Bible meditation becomes, the wider prayer grows. The prayer of the inner room becomes intercession for kings, and expands into prayer that embraces nations and the world.
“Think Globally”
— the spirituality Pastor David Jang presents is not first a grand strategy for world missions, but the gospel instinct that naturally flows from the heart of a person thoroughly melted by grace.
Rembrandt painted light and darkness all his life. But in none of his paintings did darkness ever defeat the light. The one who stands as a watchman of truth and kneels as a prayerful servant of grace — that person is the one who still holds that unshakable light in the world today. Pastor David Jang’s message running through 1 Timothy asks all of us, quietly yet firmly: On which side of that light are you standing now?
